The Twenty20
cricket world championship is the ICC Men's T20 World Cup, formerly known as
the ICC World Twenty20. The T20 World Cup Qualifier is how six additional teams
were selected for the event, which is now 16 teams and is run by the
International Cricket Council (ICC), the world's governing body of cricket.
Historically,
the tournament has taken place every two years. The tournament was originally
slated to take place in Australia in 2020, however owing to COVID-19, it was
moved to 2021 and given India as the new host country, taking place five years
after the 2016 edition. The matches were moved to Oman and the United Arab
Emirates (UAE) owing of the COVID-19 outbreak in India. The ICC proposed
holding a competition in 2018, with South Africa as a potential host, in May
2016. However, the ICC abandoned plans for the 2018 edition following the
completion of the 2017 ICC Champions Trophy.
At Eden Park in Auckland, the first men's complete international Twenty20 game was played on February 17, 2005, with Australia defeating New Zealand. The game was played in a lighthearted fashion, and both teams wore 1980s-style uniforms, with the New Zealand team's being an exact replica of the Beige Brigade's. At the Beige Brigade's request, several of the players also adopted moustaches, beards, and hairstyles common in the 1980s, competing among themselves for the greatest throwback appearance. The game was easily won by Australia, and when the outcome became clear at the conclusion of New Zealand's innings, the players and umpires took things less seriously. In reaction to Glenn McGrath's faux red card (red cards are not often used in cricket) for playfully reenacting the Trevor Chappell underarm incident during an ODI between the two teams in 1981, Billy Bowden mock-shown him a real red card.
Only the West Indies has won the competition several times out of the seven tournaments that have been played thus far. India won the first World Twenty20 tournament in 2007, which was held in South Africa, defeating Pakistan in the championship match at Wanderers Stadium. The 2009 competition was held in England, and it was won by Pakistan, the previous runner-up, who defeated Sri Lanka in the championship game at Lord's. The nations that make up the West Indies cricket squad hosted the third competition in 2010. England won their first international competition by defeating Australia in the final in Barbados, which was held at Kensington Oval.
The fourth
tournament, the 2012 World Twenty20, was held in Asia for the first time, with all matches
played in Sri Lanka. The West Indies won the tournament by defeating Sri Lanka
in the final, winning its first international tournament since the 2004 Champions Trophy. The fifth tournament, the 2014 ICC World Twenty20, was hosted by Bangladesh, and was won by
Sri Lanka defeating India, Sri Lanka being the first team to play in three
finals. The sixth tournament, the 2016 ICC World Twenty20, was hosted by India and was won by West Indies defeating England. Australia are the current T20 World Cup holders, having beaten New Zealand in the 2021 final, winning their first title. Also read about Host & Venue.
Impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on cricket:
The ICC said in July 2020 that the pandemic had caused both the 2020 and 2021 editions to be delayed by one year. As a result, the tournaments that were initially scheduled to be held by Australia in 2020 and India in 2021 were shifted to November 2021 and October 2022, respectively. The tournaments will still be held in Australia and India, although in reverse order, with Australia hosting in 2021 and India in 2022. The 2021 tournament took place in Oman and the United Arab Emirates from October 17 to November 14, 2021.
